In this reading of Lord of the Flies, most of the boys went hunting. Piggy and the littluns stayed down on the beach. While hunting, they decided to have a little fun and start prodding Roger with their spears. They were pretending he was a pig. He was starting to get hurt though and the boys didn't realize it. They finally stopped when they got close to killing him. Ralph had even noticed he was starting to lose all civilization and was showing savagery. This represent sthe savagery and brutality we all, as a society, may show our savagery and brutality whenever we let it out. It can overcome civilization anytime if we allow it to.
This leads to Simon figuring out that the Lord of the Flies was staniding for the "beast" or evil within us. Simon is the only one that understands this, but the Lord of the Flies warned Simon that the others will "do" him and this shows that our savage can overcome civilization.
Jack and Ralph are also fighting over their leadership. Ralph was slowing losing his authority and Jack was getting all of it, but when Ralph said they would stop and rest for the night and climb in the morning, Jack tried to get the rest of the boys to follow but they wouldnt, so he reluctantly went on.
Also, at the end of the meeting at the end of our reading, Jack tried again to get the boys to go against Ralph. He made an honest attempt, but failed. Jack, Roger, and Maurice all ended up going off by themselves. This shows that the only respect or connection to society the rest of the boys have left is the conch. Ralph was holding the conch while talking and the boys respected and looked at the conch with more hope than they did Jack. I wonder if Jack is going to come back.
