In the third chapter of Lord of the Flies, Jack is still trying to hunt. He still cannot bring himself to kill the pig that he was tracking down. While Jack is obsessed with killing his pig, Ralph is trying to build huts so they have some shelter. While Jack was out hunting he turned into a savage. He is now showing his darker side. He put on his "mask" (face paint) and shed his clothing which shows that he is basically turning into another person. He has started to be physically abusive. He struck Piggy twice and broke a lense out on his glasses. I think that by breaking one lense out, this shows that their civilization and society is falling apart bit by bit.
On the other hand, Ralph is the only one working on the huts and set on getting rescued. Ralph is wanting to get the huts built so they, not only have shelter, but so the littluns have a sense of home and protection. He believes that it will make them feel safe and not so frightened at night.
Simon was also helping on the huts, somewhat. Simon is the one that knows their is an evil out there and brings it to Jack and Ralph's attention and makes them realize that there is evil. But Simon is the kind, caring boy of the whole group. He helped the littluns by giving them fruit and is the "light" around the island. Everywhere he goes seems to be a happier, lush place. He symbolizes the Christ-like figure in their society.
I noticed that Jack was ordering everyone to eat whether they wanted to or not. I think this shows that Jack has turned savage and wants everyone to notice that he did something for them. He wants to have part of the leadership that Ralph is supposed to have.
Jack is not the only one who is to be blamed for something. Ralph is always complaining that no one is helping him and all the rest of the boys want to do is play. I don't understand why he doesn't tell them to do something if he wants help. He is the leader after all.
Jack and Ralph kind of have a love hate relationship. I think Jack and Ralph could be good friends but they have differences that complicate their relationship as a friend.
I also noticed that all of the boys do have their own slang language. "Littluns" and "Samneric" are examples. They combined Sam and Eric because the boys are inseperable and always together, therefore, their names were combined.
The similie "the creepers dropped their ropes, like the rigging of foundered ship" shows that the author is trying to make stronger the image of the island being like a boat. All of the boys are going to have to work harder and together if they are going to be rescued.
I wonder if Piggy is ever going to snap or just go off on one of the boys in the group? Is he going to put up with Jack forever?
I think Jack is too focused on hunting. If he doesn't help with anything else, then he will never get off the island. At least Ralph is trying to get off the island. Jack doesn't even care anymore if anyone rescues them or not.
ReplyDeleteI think Piggy will have to put up with Jack, otherwise he may get beat up by Jack or maybe even worse. Jack thinks he is inferior when he has his mask on.
